couch, 2024
walnut & brass
upholstery foam, found textile & thread
After receiving the POD award alongside my classmate Isaac Letoa, we decided to work together on a collaborative centerpiece for our two-person show scheduled the following summer. We conceived of and designed together a couch that would showcase our complimentary skillsets and aesthetics: Isaac’s smooth and intricate wood sculpture with my own eclectic and colorful textile work. The frame is made of walnut with mortis and tenon joinery and brass pins. The cushions are made with individually cut tubes of upholstery foam, wrapped and sewn with found fabric (denim, cotton, fleece) and hand sewn into columns, then threaded into solid seat and back units.
The couch served as the heart of our show, two cats in the yard, and inspired other pieces including Isaac’s coffee table and more collaborative work, like the rug, made of scrap fabric leftover over from cushion construction.
